E-Uae Tutorial

in Tutorial strani, Giochi strani, Siti strani, scritto da Mark Papercraft il 6th Luglio, 2008

This is the english version 0.9.34b tutorial of the E-UAE. I’ve decided to translate this guide from Italian to English, so that everybody in the world can play Amiga 500 videogames on MAC OSX.
Let’s start, and first of all, forgive my english.
Let’s start.

DOWNLOAD THE EMULATOR FOR AMIGA 500 MAC OSX
YOU CAN FIND IT HERE
Unzip your .dmg on your hardisk. If you click twice in the start icon, you will notice that a window will appear asking to load a configuration file. This config file is not inside the zip file, so you will need another tool to create it.

DOWNLOAD HI-TORO
You can find it here
What’s Hi-toro? It’s a configuration editor for E-uae. You can open, save and edit your config file for e-uae with that. Setting this looks difficult, but belive me is not so hard.
Once you have installed on your application folder, simply with a twice click, the program will quickly open.

hi-toro.jpg

On top there are several menù options and in the center there are parameters for settings.
BUT FIRST OF ALL…
We must link Hi-Toro with the emulator E-uae, to make it works them togeter…to to this, go to “preference” (on the finder menù)…and in the first string put the Url of the folder where you have installed your E-UAE.app. Click OK and go to set the parameters.
Nothing about “overview, so move on to…
ROM:
On the first string on the top ,where is written “ROM”, you must load the kickstart 1.3. If you don’t have it, you can simply download it from the net, just writing “amiga kickstart 1.3″
or simply with the help of our beloved mule. Don’t ask to me please.
Have you loaded the kickstart on the ROM string ? Well so we go on the next step.
RAM:
Bring the “chipRAM” to 2MB and “Fast RAM” to 1Mb.
CPU:
Click on the left coulum, 68020.
CHIPSET:
Choose ECS
DISPLAY:
There are no rules to follow here, just set the parameters of the screen at your best pleasure.
N.b. If you choose “full screen”, remember that to come back to the normal visualization, you must click F11+s. Before to to that, you must go to “system preferences”, “Mouse and keyboard” and see if the voice “use all the keys F1,F2,ecc” it’s open…if not, the key F11 will not be usable and the program will stop in full screen mode.
AUDIO:
Leave it all
FLOPPIES:
Here you must insert virtual floppies, the roms.
Don’t you have ROMS? Don’t worry, go to this web site: http://www.lemonamiga.com/
This site is terrific! You can find here all the Amiga games, in the GAMES section. But not only games, also sound files, text, solutions and hints, and toons of cool stuff. A special place for every AMIGA lover.
Download your favourite videogame and load it’s virtual floppies on the “floppies” section on Hi-toro. When the game will ask you to change the floppy, just click F11+F1 and load another floppy.
HDD:
Leave it so
DEVICES:
Joystick port 0: mouse. Joystik port 1: selecy custom 1 and on the right section of the new window that will appear, set your favorite keys for the cursor, right, left,up,down and fire.
Keyboard language lasciate U.S.
ROM PATH:
Should be some sort of shortcuts for the program, i never used that….try if you want.

Now save your masterpiece from the finder menù, “Configuration” and “Save as” possibly inside the E-uae folder. We have created a .uaerc file, the config file that E-Uae asked for…at the beginning. Now click OK and go on.
HOW TO SAVE YOUR PROGRESS
Most of the Amiga games are not only platform games, there are also graphic adventures, rpg and so on…so they will need a save file for your game progress…
Creating a save file is easy.
On Hi-toro go to the section “FLOPPIES“, on the botton-right there is a button “Make disk file“, click it and in the new window that will appear, click”SELECT“, now write inside the string on the top the name of your savegame disk ..for example “savedisk” and click “SELECT“, back to the prev screen, confirm it clicking button “MAKE“. Now your savegame floppy is created. Insert it everytime you will need to save a game, and naturally when you will need to load a saved game.

Have fun! .If something doesn’t works, write to me and will try to help you. Every time you open Hi-toro, remember to load the config file we have created.

I have been able to get things working on my Dual 2GHz PowerMac, but it runs very slowly. In fact, I have an old Windows 2000 laptop that runs UAE much faster. Any ideas why??

  2. Mark Papercraft Says:

I have a Dual 2Ghz mac too…but gamespeed it’s the same of the original Amiga. Do you mean that when you play the game is slow or just the loading time ? Anyway compliments for your works, you are very skilled in design. I’ve seen your website ;)

  3. Gareth Reeves Says:

What about games like Rick Dangerous where tow fire buttons are required, but in the devices menu, you are only allowed to allocate one key for “fire”.??

  4. Mark Says:

Hey, thanks so much for this. Tried and gave up on this a couple of times before, I doubt I would have had managed it without you ;D Thanks again.

  5. A couple of useful tips... Says:

    Thank you for taking the time to write up that tutorial, it’s been very useful indeed and I would never have got up and running without it. Having said that, there are a couple of things I would like to add;

Firstly, you don’t need to change anything in the system preferences in order to access the F11 key. If your keyboard is set up so that the F11 key turns down the volume (or has any other special action assigned to it), holding down the function key (’fn’ which should be on the bottom left of any Mac keyboard without a numeric keyboard, or just under F13 on any keyboard with one) will switch the key back to being the F11 key, so to exit full screen, you just press fn + F11 + S.

Secondly, under the floppies tab, there’s an option to increase the disk loading speed up to 800%. This is well worth it, although it doesn’t work for all games.

Thirdly, I had real issues getting my screen centred, setting the display tab to fullscreen resolution 800 x 600, checking the ‘correct aspect ratio’ box and setting the ‘Centre horizontal’ and Centre vertical’ options to simple seemed to sort it out.

Finally, with the ‘Chipset’ tab, there is an option to switch the chipset to AGA, which should allow you to run the games listed on lemonamiga.com with the little AGA logo next to them. I haven’t tried this yet, and it may well involve having to re-configure everything else to get it running, but I thought it was worth mentioning as the AGA thing confused the hell out of me.

Anyway, thanks again for writing this up.
